Postponing your wedding....

Postponing a wedding, while not as uncomfortable as canceling, is certainly not the most fun or easy thing to do for the bride and groom. There are many reasons to postpone a wedding... Sometimes, the couple decides that they need to slow down and enjoy their engagement for a while or they are just overwhelmed with work or the basics of life in general. Other times, they realize that maybe they are not ready to be married, either emotionally or because of financial circumstances. A death in the family or injury, and, then there’s when an unexpected illness leads to a postponement… In certain cases a cancelled or postponed wedding could be a difficult situation for the bride, but what when it becomes difficult for both the bride and groom?
Back in March I started working with a wonderful couple planning an intimate setting…their dream wedding. Unfortunately, the wedding has been postponed due to unexpected health problems the groom is facing. Life is unpredictable and at times we may face things that are beyond our control.
To G and M; you are both in my thoughts and prayers and know that the love you have for each other will help you overcome all the obstacles and challenges to come. I wish you success in your treatments and a speedy recovery.

So how do you break the news to your guests?

The very first step is to notify the guests. If invitations have not been sent out, then you can send out cards announcing that wedding has been postponed, and that they will be notified of when the new date is. If invitations have already been sent, than you will need to personally call guests and tell them that the wedding has been postponed. This can be difficult, but postponing it until the last minute will only cause irritation. Be sure to contact guests who will be arriving early or traveling a long distance first. There are many aspects to a wedding, and many different vendors and services being used. Depending on the amount of time left before the wedding, the need to inform your guests and professionals as soon as possible.

Contact Services

You will need to contact all the vendors and other service providers who are working with your wedding. The caterers, reception hall, printers, etc. will all have to be notified that the wedding has been canceled for the current date. Ask about the cancellation policy and request any refunds you are entitled.

Prepare for the Calls

As soon as you announce that the wedding has been postponed, everyone will begin calling to find out why. If you send out invitations, you can include a message to not call, but this will likely only cause more curiosity. Giving a reason for the postponement is not necessary. However, failing to give a reason and not answering calls or returning messages will usually lead to gossip and speculation. A general, vague message is usually better. If the reason is for illness, death or injury, being direct is usually the best.


Return the Gifts

The gifts will all need to be returned. Failing to do so does look bad. Each gift should be returned to the person who sent it along with a personal letter thanking them for their gift. The only time a gift should not be returned is if the sender specifically says not to return it.

**One of the biggest issues with cancelled/postponed weddings is the forfeiture of deposits. Some vendors and venues will require you to pay the entire contracted amount even in the event of a postponement/cancellation so it is imperative that you read your contracts carefully and feel comfortable with their cancellation policies. Most couples don’t think they would ever need to postpone or cancel their wedding plans when they start the process, but life is unpredictable, things change and you want to be sure cancellation policies are fair and equitable.

Autumn Inspiration {Signature Drink}

{ Hot Apple Cider }

Nothing beats a hot cup of apple cider in the cool midst of autumn.
Perfect for a crisp autumn wedding, bridal shower or gathering, hot apple cider is a comforting drink to add to your celebration. For an added touch, embellish mugs of cider with whole cinnamon sticks, or garnish cocoa with marshamallows in the shape of the guest of honor's initials.
This beverage is sure to be a hit for a warm, intimate celebration.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz coffee liqueur
16 oz apple cider
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup dried apple slices
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp butter
Preparation:
Simmer cider, apple slices, Kahlua, cinnamon stick, and dried cherries in saucepan for 15 minutes. Stir in lemon juice, add butter if desired, and serve in mugs. Serve in Irish coffee cup.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

I am at a loss for words for this furball of cuteness! Leo snucked and tucked in mommy and daddy's bed. Apparently he had a RUFF morning walk.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. When it's in your best interest... practice obedience. Stretch before rising. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree. Never pretend to be something you are not. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

The Unity Candle

The lighting of a unity candle is performed to symbolize the pledge of unity between the bride and groom, the merging of two families, and their love for the bride and groom.
More often it is to symbolize the union of two individuals, becoming one in commitment. The popular explanation is that the taper candles are lit by representatives from each family (usually the mothers of the bride and groom) to symbolize the love and allegiance that each family has for either the bride or the groom. As the bride and groom use these two flames to light the unity candle (usually after formal vows), they bring the love of both families together in a united love of the new couple. Generally, the two tapers are left burning and replaced in their holders (because each family's love for their own will continue). However, in some ceremonies they may blow out their individual candles to symbolize the extinguishing of their two single lives.

Often the unity candle is personalized complementing the wedding invitation, with the couple's monogram, or other ornamentation; crystals, ribbon etc... The candles are almost always white or ivory. The lighting ceremony may be accompanied by special music, an explanation of the symbolism, or just some period of mutual gazing by the happy couple. In some circles, it is customary for the couple to save the unity candle and relight it on anniversaries.
Tip: Make sure that there aren't any decorative beads, ribbon or lace around the flame of the candles - they can easily catch fire. Consider pre-lighting the taper candles and the Unity candle to make them easier to light in outdoor ceremonies. If your ceremony is outdoors, always have several extra lighters nearby in case the wind decides to blow the candles out and/or try putting the Unity Candle inside a glass hurricane lamp can be very helpful in protecting from the wind/breeze.

Save the Date...

A Save the Date is a sort of "reserve the date" type of wedding announcement that is customized and/or personalized and sent to the bride’s and the groom’s guests before the wedding.

Normally couples would send a card or magnet...one that would be special and unique to them and that guests would love to keep around as a reminder--On that note let me share that I've personally used (a few times) Save the Date cards as a bookmark!

So, how about changing it up a bit and creating a Save the Date video? Uh huh---I found this Save the Date on You Tube and Oh Lord!-I am sure that guests after receiving and watching this (even if they wanted/tried to) forget the date...that, would be highly impossible. Enjoy!

Candy Buffet {Deborah & Brian 8.07.09}

Deborah and Brian tied the knot on Friday, August 7th, 2009 and had their beautiful reception at Nanina's in the Park, Belleville, NJ...and so our Candy Buffet was sure a hit!

Our Candy Buffet, in addition to being Deb and Brian's sweet wedding favor, it was also a fun and conversational piece for their guests.

It not only added fun and color to their wedding reception, but also brought back memories to Deborah and Brian of their childhood days. Their selection: ol' time favorite candies.
